If moving to Hawaii or Overseas, please
schedule an appointment at least six months in advance to
meet the requirements for bringing your pet.
Lost Pets
Pets
sometimes get confused when traveling and may get lost if
they get separated from you. Pets are often tracked
back to our clinic by their rabies tags. We recommend
you leave a contact number with us that will be good
throughout the moving process-cell phone or number of a relative who
can contact you. Also, update your pets' microchip contact
info with the microchip company. If your pets do not
have microchips, consider getting them.
Records & Medications
Call your
veterinarian to get your records copied and ready for you to
pick up. Ask for refills of medications; be sure to ask for
enough supply to last until you are settled in your new
home. If you will need another refill before you will have
a chance to establish a relationship with a new vet, ask us
for a written prescription to take with you. Be prepared to
bring your pet in for blood work if needed for prescription
refills.
Annual Exams & Vaccinations
Please ask
us if you do not remember when your pets are due for annual
exams and vaccinations. Schedule pets'; annual appointments
for before the move, or plan to find a new vet in time to
keep your pets current. Ask your doctor to recommend a
veterinarian in your new area.
Health Concerns Specific to Your Destination
You may
want to schedule an appointment with us to cover issues
specific to your new climate-heartworm seasons may differ,
different vaccinations may be recommended, fleas and ticks
may be prevalent, etc. By planning in advance, your pets
may get vaccinations and preventatives before you go,
eliminating gaps in your pets' protection.
Driving or Flying with Pets
Plan your
pets' travel. Be sure to have leashes and collars with
current tags, proper travel cages, and enough food for each
of your pets. Ask your veterinarian about sedation if
needed for an anxious pet.
If you
will be flying with your pet, you will need to schedule an
examination for a health certificate. Health certificates
must be issued within one week before traveling.
An
acclimation letter may be required by the airline for any
animal traveling in the cargo area. Please be aware that
during severe weather conditions (heat & cold), animals may
be banned from flying in the cargo area of airplanes.
Hawaii or Foreign Destinations
If you will
be moving to Hawaii or overseas with your pet, there are
special requirements. Please let us know at least six
months in advance so that we can help you start the
process. There are different vaccination schedules,
identification requirements, blood work, and waiting periods
for different destinations.
