This may sound
like a truism, but in fact, heavy isn't healthy for people or pets.
Carrying around a few extra pounds can be even more of a big deal for our
pets than it is for us. In fact, experts say that up to 60 percent of
all adult dogs are overweight or likely to get that way due to age or
activity level.
Our pets
often get heavy because we love them so much. Since we love them so
much, we share our food with them. Since we love them so much, we feed
them whenever they look hungry or we give them snacks or treats throughout
the day. These habits can lead to extra pounds on our pets.
Weight
problems go hand in hand with inactive lifestyles. Animals
carrying extra weight have an increased incidence of torn ligaments,
arthritis, heart disease, breathing problems, skin problems, and an
inability to get around. This is
especially a problem for older pets.
Studies have even shown that pets at their
ideal weight live an average of two years longer than overweight pets!

or even a possible medication to help your pet get to its optimal weight.
