DENTISTRY
At Parker Center Animal Clinic, we take your pet's dental
health seriously!
Your pet's dental health is important. Imagine what
your mouth would feel like if you did not brush your teeth
for a month. Have you brushed your pet's teeth this
month? Bacteria builds up forming plaque that
calcifies into tartar. The plaque and tartar can form
both above and below the gum line and eventually aid in
causing gingivitis which causes gum bleeding and allows the
bacteria entry into the pet's bloodstream and access to the
organs. Besides being unsightly, this can cause bad
breath, tooth decay, and even liver, kidney, and heart
disease!
Your pet's teeth are his primary tools, he uses them to
eat, groom, and play. If his teeth are causing him
pain due to dental disease, he may not be as likely to play
with toys, eat (or enjoy eating), or groom properly.
Also, he may be less energetic and just not seem like
himself. Bad breath is not a necessity, it is often a
symptom of serious dental disease.
Professional dental cleaning requires both a thorough
examination and scaling of the teeth both above and below
the gum line. It may also include x-rays and even
tooth extractions in more serious cases. Because of
this, your pet must be anesthetized for the dental cleaning.
Our dental patients are monitored throughout anesthesia
and receive fluids through an intravenous (IV) catheter to
help their bodies metabolize the anesthetic. Many
patients will require antibiotics and pain medications after
the procedure.
There are many products including pet toothbrushes and
toothpastes, rinses to be added to your pet's water, and
crunchy dental kibbles that will aid in keeping your pet's
teeth healthy and preventing the diseases caused by poor
dental health.
